“How’s Real Estate?”

With the average time a house on the market at 8.6 months, (previous average being about 6 months) many analysts are still wondering if we are headed for another dip. The first tax credit helped the housing markets towards the end of last year, and we believe that as we near that April 30th deadline, for the most recent tax credit, we will still see another push. Will the credit be extended? Only time will tell, but we do feel that the credit has helped the first time homebuyer and has been a small light in a dim market. What will happen if congress doesn’t extend this credit again? There are many questions and plenty of opinions, we will try and do our best to keep you informed as possible.

Let’s throw out the numbers and jargon for the rest of this discussion. I get asked everyday at least once, “how’s business?” How’s the housing market here in Saint Louis? Based purely on what we are seeing at Upper End Properties, it actually doesn’t feel too bad. I went on a tour of our open houses a couple Sundays ago. It was the first really nice day of 2010, but there were a lot of people out looking around. I think the answer to the questions probably depends on what area of town you are in, but in general there seems to be a lot of activity in the traditionally popular areas of St. Louis. Location is still one of the top reasons people buy real estate, and unless something major happens, I can’t see why that will ever change. For us at Upper End Properties, many of our relationships are located in these areas within the Central Cooridor of St. Louis. So to answer the question, I’m feeling pretty good about our business and the direction the market is heading.
