A lot of people say TV is bad for the brain.  Reading, writing, and working are all much more important, much more educational, and much more fundamental in the development of well-rounded individual.  While all of us here at Upper End Properties value the importance of the occasional newspaper, newsletter, or novel, it’s becoming pretty apparent that television is more or less taking over.

Before you start to worry about our sanity, hear us out.

Television isn’t what it used to be.  Sure it’s taking some plunges into the depths of the unknown (see Rock of Love, Real Housewives, or Wife Swap) but for the most part, television has emerged as a leading source of education and information for a variety of traditional industries; real estate being one of the most popular.

When you think Real Estate on television, you have a lot of options.  HGTV is probably the largest network, but you’ve also got smaller stations like Bravo and DIY making waves as well.  What are my favorite shows?  I like the entertaining shows like Flipping Out, Million Dollar Listing, and House Hunters International.  I also like the educational shows like Color Splash, Property Virgins, and Real Estate Intervention.  I even have a sweet spot for home-building shows like Holmes on Homes, the Montelongo brothers, and Carter Can.

In a time where television gets a rep for being unintelligent, trashy, and quite frankly, a waste of time, Real Estate shows are becoming more popular for providing information and ideas, and inspiring viewers to not only learn new trades, but practice them as well.  With the rise of these shows, as well as new programs on channels such as Food Network, Discovery, and Smithsonian, we’re now able to not only become well-rounded individuals, but also well informed, without leaving the comforts of our own couch.

We want to know what your favorite Real Estate/Property shows are right now.  We’ve briefly mentioned ours and want to know if we’re missing out on any.  Leave your favorites in the comments!
